Early Childhood Education Program

The answer to this question largely depends on which organization the employee chooses to work with. However, according to data provided by the Government of Canada , the average salary range for Early Childhood Educators in Quebec is between $21.50 per hour or approximately $41,925 per year, and $25.19 per hour, or $49,121 per year.

In addition, Early Childhood Educators may earn a higher salary by gaining years of experience, earning a promotion to a management position, or by opening their own childcare center.

The main differences between obtaining an AEC and a DEC in Early Childhood Education in Quebec are the following:

AEC

• Takes 24 months to complete.
• Students are only required to complete program-specific courses.
• There is no Ministerial Exit Exam.
• After graduating, AEC holders must accumulate three years of work experience before being recognized as qualified educators for the purposes of satisfying the requirements set by the Ministère de la Famille.
• AEC graduates are paid as per the pay scale for the profession.
• Graduates do not obtain the credits needed to advance to university.

DEC

• Takes 36 months to complete.
• Students are required to complete a general education component of their studies in addition to program-specific courses.
• Students must pass the Ministerial Exit Exam in order to graduate.
• DEC graduates are immediately recognized as qualified educators who have satisfied the requirements set by the Quebec Ministry of Family.
• While equally qualified, DEC graduates are paid at a higher rate than AEC graduates due to the additional year of study.
• Graduates may advance to university.

• Part-time students: $1,000.00 (CAD) per course.

• Full-time students: $670.00 (CAD) per semester.
  + additional fees of $1,621.00 (CAD) per semester.
• Part-time students: $1,000.00 (CAD) per semester.
  + additional fees of $7,67 (CAD) per hour of instruction, per semester.

ADMISSION TO A DEC PROGRAM

In order to be admitted into a program that leads to the attainment of a Diploma of College Studies (Diplôme d’études collégiales or DEC in French), the applicant must meet one of the five following requirements:

*Note that these requirements are set by the Quebec Ministry of Education and are common to all colleges across the province.

1. A HOLDER OF A SECONDARY SCHOOL DIPLOMA (DES)

A holder of a Secondary School Diploma (SSD) who satisfies the special conditions, if any, established by the Minister for admission may be admitted to a program of studies leading to a Diploma of College Studies.

2. A HOLDER OF A SECONDARY VOCATIONAL DIPLOMA OR HAS OBTAINED CREDIT

2.1. A holder of a Secondary School Vocational Diploma (SSVD) who satisfies the special conditions, if any, established by the Minister for admission or has obtained the number of credits allotted by the Basic school regulation for preschool, elementary and secondary education (chapter I-13.3, r. 8) or by the Basic adult general education regulation (chapter I-13.3, r. 9) for the following subjects may be admitted to a program of studies leading to a Diploma of College Studies:

(1) Secondary V Language of Instruction;

(2) Secondary V Second Language; and

(3) Secondary IV Mathematics.

A holder of a Secondary School Vocational Diploma who satisfies the conditions of admission established by the Minister may also be admitted to a program of technical studies leading to the Diploma of College Studies. The conditions of admission are established for each program of studies to ensure continuity of training and are based on the vocational training received at the secondary level.

3. EQUIVALENCY ACCEPTANCE

Despite sections 1 and 2, a college may admit a person to a program of studies leading to a Diploma of College Studies if the person has received instruction the college considers equivalent.

4. EXPERIENCE EQUIVALENCY + INTERRUPTED STUDIES

A college may also admit to such a program of studies a person who has instruction and experience the college considers sufficient and who has interrupted full-time studies for a cumulative period of at least 24 months.

5. COMMITMENT AGREEMENT

A college may conditionally admit to a program of studies leading to a Diploma of College Studies a person who, not having obtained all the credits required by the Basic school regulation for preschool, elementary and secondary education (chapter I-13.3, r. 8) or by the Basic adult general education regulation (chapter I-13.3, r. 9) to obtain a Secondary School Diploma, commits to obtaining the missing credits in the first term.

• The foregoing also applies to a holder of a Secondary School Vocational Diploma who has not obtained all the credits for the subjects mentioned in subparagraphs 1 to 3 of the first paragraph of section 2.1.
• Despite the foregoing, a person who must obtain more than 6 missing credits or who has previously failed to fulfil his or her commitments after being conditionally admitted may not be conditionally admitted.

ADMISSION TO AEC PROGRAMS

In order to be admitted to an Attestation of Collegial Studies (Attestation d’études collégiales or AEC in French) program, the applicant must have obtained a high school diploma OR can demonstrate that they have the ability to undertake college studies

AND

the applicant must also meet one of the following conditions:

1. INTERRUPTED STUDIES

The applicant has interrupted their studies for at least two consecutive terms or one school year.

OR

2. AGREEMENTS

The applicant is covered by an agreement between the College and an employer, or by the College and a government program.

OR

3. POST-SECONDARY STUDIES

The applicant has completed at least one year of post-secondary studies spread over one year or more.

This program is geared towards the adult sector who meet the following conditions:

• The candidate has a high school diploma (DES) or professional experience deemed sufficient by the College

AND meets one of the following three conditions:

1. Has interrupted studies for at least two consecutive semesters or one school year; OR
2. Has completed at least one year of post-secondary education over a period of one year or more; OR
3. Is subject to an agreement between the College and an employer or the College and a government program.

*Applicants must also be a Canadian citizen, a landed immigrant, or any other individual with a recognized immigrant status who is entitled to study in Quebec.
